Internet Myth #3: The pet food store salesperson (insert breeder, groomer, trainer, etc) is the best source of information in regards to nutrition, what I should feed my dog/cat and health-care information.

A resounding NO. That is FALSE!

1) Would you ask the cashier or stock person at your local supermarket what you should eat to help your kidney disease or diabetes? If not, why would it make sense to ask your pet food sales staff the same question about your dog?

2) Would you ask your hairdresser what treatment she would recommend for that newly found itchy rash on your arm? If not then why would you ask your groomer about your dog's skin problem?

3) Would you ask your mother what vaccination protocol she would recommend for your new-born child? Maybe, but I think your pediatrician might be a better choice for that question. Likewise, relying solely on the breeder's advice for this kind of health-care information is not wise. Please keep in mind that a new mother may know a lot about childbirth but that doesn't give them a medical degree in Pediatrics. Similarly, a breeder may have introduced a male and female dog so that the miracle of nature has produced puppies but that doesn't give them a degree in Veterinary Medicine.

Rather than ask their Veterinarian who has 7-10 years of specialized University Education and many, many years of continuing education and practical experience, clients will listen to and rely on information provided by someone who has very little in the way of specialized education. For example, often the pet food salesperson is relying on their job as a part-time venture and has been trained "in-house" by others who were trained on-the-job. They are also often taught to steer the pet-owner towards a particular brand which just so happens to have a higher mark-up and is more profitable to the store.

Be careful and wary. Your Veterinarian is always the best option for scientific, unbiased and up-to-date pet-care information. And, we are always happy to help.
