Internet Myths and Fallacies regarding Pet Care

As you know, the internet is a wealth of information. However, we should also keep in mind that it is also a fount of misinformation as well. Every day, I speak with clients who have read something on the internet that Is taken as gospel and yet has little to no scientific basis behind it. Typically, someone makes a statement which circulates as Fact only to be found that it is actually not.

A very common topic of concern I see in practice surrounds Pet Foods and the Pet Food Industry. Recently there have been several relatively new pet food companies that have made incredible strides in the marketing of their foods by using scare tactics and fear-mongering to promote their own products. In addition, there are several websites claiming to be "experts" in pet foods which go as far as "rating" the pet foods. Interestingly, when you take a closer look you will find for example that the owners and authors of these websites often have little to no applicable education or expertise in the field. As an example, one of the more popular sites is run not by a Veterinarian or Veterinary Nutritionist but rather a human dentist.

Over the next while I will be addressing some of the common Myths and Fallacies that have come to my attention and will be trying to set the record straight by posting links to articles which refute them with scientific evidence and facts. I hope this will be of interest to you all.
